Atlantic

I have a deep romantic attachment to the sea. I learnt to sail when I was 7. Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues under the Sea is one of the stories I remember best from childhood. Cousteau was a hero. I told my grandparents I was going to be a submarine commander. I can think of nothing more peaceful than going to sleep to the sound of the waves. To me it’s a spiritual place.

I am just as fascinated by the Second World War. As a boy I watched black and white war movies and read Commando Picture Library comics. Later I almost became a soldier.

In this project I have drawn these two strands together: the sea and the biggest maritime story of WWII - the Battle of the Atlantic - in which 30,000 allied sailors lost their lives and more than 3,000 ships were sunk.

I had the idea to plot the places in the Atlantic where ships were sunk in the battle and to photograph those locations. I wanted to contrast the empty sea with the dramatic events that had taken place. The final series comprises 20 photographs and where possible I’ve named them after a ship that was sunk in the location the shot was taken.
